Superbowl Mania

It is that time of year again. This is the time of year to spend money on snack food and wings and all of the other things that we might regret in the morning. We pick teams for arbitrary terms e.g., police records, who beat your team, or any other small reason other than the stats of the players. The Superbowl is upon us tonight.

There are three types of people who watch the Superbowl. The first type of person are the people who watch for the game. There are two sub-types. There are the fans of two teams that actually have people in the Superbowl. This is the big moment for those two teams to shine. The other sub-type are NFL fans who have a team, yet that team has been eliminated. These people are more likely to cheer for the team, that is not in their team’s division or against the rival of the team that they normally cheer for. After the people who watch for the action, come the people who watch for the National Anthem and halftime show. There are two sub-types of these people as well. There are the people who really want the singer to succeed. They are either fans of the performer or a fan of the genre. The second sub-type are watching to see if the people mess up on national television or are watching to give a critique. The final type are people who say, “I do not really care who wins. I only watch for the commercials.” However, there is a wonder that people still say this since the commercials will or are already online.

That being said, I am not trying to be a cynic. I love the Superbowl and remember plenty of times just watching for the energy in the room during the Bowl. The Superbowl has almost become the friend equivalent to Thanksgiving. We eat a lot of food that we should or should not eat; we socialize to catch up on Thanksgiving or party during the Superbowl;  we watch football. The Superbowl brings these three types of people together for at least one night. Whatever reason you have for watching or ignoring the Bowl, be safe!
